In
March 2010, it will be 55 years since my husband, David, and
I bought our farm. It came with some old machinery,
eighty-six acres of land and 13 cows. We remodeled the barn
and bought more cows and continued to add on as we went
along. We had to carry all the milk to the milk house and
use milk cans. Then came the dumping station and now we have
the pipeline.
In 1980, my husband died but my kids and I kept up the
farm. When Glenn, our youngest, graduated, he got a job off
the farm but Richard and Brenda stayed on and now my
grandson, Brian, (Richard’s son) works here too. We rent
land all around us and plant oats and corn for silage and
grain. When we make hay, we call on some of the
grandchildren to help and Glenn, too. We have about seventy
milking cows and Rich raises our heifers for replacements on
a farm he bought next door.
Last year we received a new “Dairy of Distinction” award
marking 20 years as a “Dairy of Distinction” member. We are
proud to have this honor for 20 years. In 2006, we received
the ‘Super Milk’ sign. We strive to keep producing good
quality milk so Upstate Niagara can market the best tasting
products for the consumers.
