Wideman
Farms in Akron, N.Y., is a third generation dairy farm
started in 1927 by Richard and Louise Wideman who came here
from Michigan. Richard’s son, Leon, took over the farm in
1953 along with his brother-in-law, Leighton Snyder, and
farmed under the name L-Ridge Farms. In 1983, Leon and
Leighton divided the farm and Leon entered into partnership
with his sons, Jim and Bob. When Leon passed away suddenly
in 1990, Bob and Jim took over the partnership.
This year, Wideman Farms became an LLC to make it easier
to bring future generations into the business. The farm
consists of 130 milk cows and 120 young stocks. We farm
about 600 acres of corn, wheat, oats, and hay. All labor is
provided by family members: by Bob and Jim and Jim’s son,
Ben, a full-time employee, and part-time help from Sam,
Josh, Seth, Libby and Linda.
Wideman Farms has been a member of the Upstate Niagara
Cooperative since the early 1970s. It has given us pride in
being a part of the cooperative that has provided
high-quality milk and dairy products to the people of
Western New York. We are also proud to have been awarded
“High Quality” for the last five years consecutively and
hope to continue this tradition for many years to come.
